My name is Allegra. I have a Bachelor of Laws, a Master of Intelligence, a Master of Criminology, and I am studying an MBA through Imperial College. I am very happily married and have two beautiful cats and a cheeky dog. I am also a sexual assault survivor. I focussed on crimes against women and children in my masters, and know first hand why reporting rates are so low. It took me in excess of two years to report the sexual assault against me to the police, and when I did, I had to trawl through my text messages, bank statements, emails and dark memories, and hated every moment of it. I don't want you to have to relive the experience so I created Fwyni, so you are empowered to report with information when you are ready, and only when you are ready. Fwyni is there for you, for when you need it.
My Story
I was raped by a friend. He was a work colleague - married with kids and 10 years my senior. The morning after, I woke up covered in my own vomit in my apartment. I glanced over to the mirrored cupboard and remembered what had happened the night before - I could see everything he was doing to me but I couldn't move. I didn't want anyone to know what had happened to me; I was embarrassed and ashamed. How could I let something like that happen to me? He is a nice guy, surely I've misinterpreted what happened? These are very common feelings to have and speak volumes as to why reporting rates are so low. In the days, weeks and months after it happened, I was so confused, depressed and paranoid - he apologised and even sent flowers to my apartment - I had to go to work and see him everyday. When I reported it to the police two years later, I couldn't remember where I had been that night, or how he had gotten back to my apartment. If I had an app like Fwyni, I would have been more likely to note down everything I could remember and to take photos of the vomit and my clothes still around my ankles, and it would have been there ready to go. I wouldn't have the police telling me to 'stop saying you're unsure' because it could be used against me if we were ever to go to court. I never got my day in court and he was never charged with the assault. It has taken a lot of work for me to get where I am today. If I had Fwyni, I would have been sure of my timeline and I would have had tangible evidence to support what had happened. I want to empower everyone who has suffered from sexual assault, violence, and domestic violence to be as sure as they can with as little effort as they can, to report to the police should they choose.
